The Società Dante Alighieri born in 1889 thanks to a group of intellectuals led by Carducci and is erected a legal institution with Royal Decree of 18 July 1893, n. 347; with D.L. n. 186 of July 27, 2004 shall be dealt with in structure and purpose, the NPO.

Its primary purpose, as stated in article 1 of the articles of Association, is "protecting and promoting the Italian language and culture in the world, reviving the spiritual ties of compatriots abroad with the motherland and feeding between foreigners love and worship for Italian civilization”.

To achieve these aims, the "Dante Alighieri" relied and still rely on constant and generous aid of over 500 committees, of which more than 400 active abroad.

Africa, America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. Every continent today can count on the activities of the headquarters of "Dante", which not only Italian language courses, but also cultural events of various kinds for thousands of partners and students in our Italy and eager to meet you in all its aspects, from figurative art to music, from sport to cinema, from theatre, to the literature.

By means of the committees abroad, moreover, the "Dante Alighieri" establishes and sub schools, libraries, clubs and courses of Italian language and culture, spread books and publications, conferences, cultural excursions and art events and music, awards prizes and scholarships; by means of the committees in Italy participates in activities designed to improve and expand the nation's culture and promote every manifestation aimed at illustrating the importance of the diffusion of the language, culture and genius creations and Italian labour.

Point of reference for the committees of Italy and abroad is the headquarters, located in Rome, Florence, and Palace chaired by Prof. Andrea Riccardi.

Since 1993, according to the Convention of 4 November 1903 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dante Alighieri Society work for Italian certification of quality with your own certificate PLIDA (Dante Alighieri Italian Language Project).

The PLIDA Certification, With the scientific approval of the University "La Sapienza" of Rome ", it is also recognized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy (Decree 18/10/2002) and the Ministry of Education, University and Research (Convention 11/02/2004), and attests the competence in Italian as a foreign language on a scale of six levels representative of as many stages of the learning process of the language that correspond to those established by the Council of Europe.
